Job summary

Cannon Corp is seeking an Automation Principal Engineer for its San Luis Obispo office. The role blends strategic client engagement, technical leadership, and hands-on engineering across water, energy, and industrial sectors.

You will oversee design, integration, and implementation, mentor junior engineers, and drive backlog and staffing alignment to deliver high-quality automation projects. Responsibilities span design oversight, PLC/SCADA programming, and commissioning, with remote work

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college, concentration in Control Systems, Electrical, or Mechanical.
California Professional Engineer (PE) License required.
15+ years of experience in control systems engineering.
8+ years of experience in project management.
5+ years of experience as a consultant.
5+ years of experience in business development.
5+ years of experience managing a team and keeping them utilized.
Proficient with PLC programming in more than 1 software platform: Rockwell, Modicon, etc.
Proficient with SCADA HMI and historian software: Ignition, Aveva/Wonderware, FTView, etc.
Experience with network design, installation, configuration and troubleshooting.
Understanding of process instrumentation including design, procurement, installation, calibration, and maintenance.
Proficient with motor control schematics, loop drawings, logic charts, network architecture drawings, and P&ID drawings.

Responsibilities

Client Engagement & Business Development: identify opportunities, develop proposals, and manage client relationships.
Project Leadership & Execution: lead design, integration, and delivery of automation projects within scope, time, and budget.
Team Collaboration & Resource Planning: mentor juniors, align resources, and support workload planning.
Design & Engineering Oversight: develop control system designs, specify hardware, and coordinate bid documents.
Integration & Commissioning: oversee PLC/SCADA programming, testing, and commissioning plans.
Regulatory & QA/QC: ensure compliance with codes and standards and maintain documentation.
