Job summary

Central Plains Steel, a division of Reliance, Inc., is seeking a dependable Material Handler & Preventative Maintenance Assistant to support warehouse operations and equipment maintenance. This role includes moving and packaging materials, assisting with basic preventative maintenance, operating material‑handling equipment, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

General duties include reading work orders, performing inspections, loading/unloading, tagging, and documentation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred with basic math and reading comprehension.
• Valid driver's license and ability to obtain certification for motorized equipment.
• Experience in warehousing and material handling preferred.

Responsibilities

• Move, package, and prepare materials for shipment or storage.
• Maintain production equipment and assist with preventative maintenance.
• Read work orders and perform required inspections and documentation.
• Operate material-handling equipment including yard trucks, forklifts, and overhead cranes.
• Tag material, complete paperwork, and coordinate with supervisors.
• Ensure safety, cleanliness, and orderliness of the work area.

Job Function

• Generally responsible for completing basic, routine tasks with detailed instructions and/or core knowledge of shop flow.
• Maintains production equipment, administer preventative maintenance programs and procedures.
• Inspects equipment to detect defects or malfunctions.
• Participates in equipment training.
• Cleans equipment according to designated maintenance procedures.
• Competently uses maintenance technician skills to identify potential issues.
• Reads and interprets equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
• Uses a variety of hand and power tools, electric meters, and material handling equipment in performing duties.
• Pulls and assembles orders based on reviewing work/shipping orders or other documentation.
• Coordinates and executes material handling.
• Performs quality control inspections.
• Sorts and packages parts as directed.
• Tags material for proper identification and complete all required documentation.
• Completes work order paperwork/documentation.
• Operates yard truck, forklift, and overhead crane for the purpose of loading and unloading trailers.
• Spot checks on inventory, completes daily and/or ad hoc checks for proper tagging of material, as directed.
• Reports any irregularities to supervisor for direction.
• Responsible for adhering to/ensuring compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work area.
• All other duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisor.

Required Skills

• Valid Driver’s License - required.
• 0-5 years of relevant experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities - required.
• Ability to show adequate manual dexterity, finger dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, and multilimbed coordination - required.
