Central Plains Steel in Wichita, KS is hiring a 1st Shift Material Handler to move metal using overhead cranes, forklifts, and related equipment in the warehouse. You will collaborate with shipping, receiving, and machine operators to meet safety, quality, productivity, and delivery goals.

This role requires a valid driver’s license, ability to lift up to 100 pounds, and stamina to stand for long periods. On-the-job training and safety protocols are provided in a supportive team environment.

Responsibilities

The 1st Shift Material Handler professional is responsible for moving metal with overhead cranes, forklifts, and other equipment to support all areas of the warehouse. They work closely with the shipping and receiving department and machine operators meet or exceed goals for Safety, Quality, Productivity, and Delivery.

Function in the Job

Heavy work - Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Job Function

• Generally responsible for completing basic, routine tasks with detailed instructions and/or core knowledge of shop flow.
• Pulls and assembles orders based on reviewing work/shipping orders or other documentation.
• Coordinates and executes material handling.
• Performs quality control inspections.
• Sorts and packages parts as directed.
• Tags material for proper identification and complete all required documentation.
• Completes work order paperwork/documentation.
• Operates yard truck, forklift, and overhead crane for the purpose of loading and unloading trailers.
• Spot checks on inventory, completes daily and/or ad hoc checks for proper tagging of material, as directed.
• Reports any irregularities to supervisor for direction.
• Responsible for adhering to/ensuring compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work area.
• All other duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisor.

Required Skills

• Valid Driver’s License - required.
• Must be able to meet or exceed Level 4 (Heavy Work) of a Personal Capacity Profile.
• 0-5 years of relevant experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities - required.
• Ability to show adequate manual dexterity, finger dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, and multi-limbed coordination - required.
• Ability to read and comprehend written instructions as applied to work situations - required.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Basic measurement skills, including taking, converting, and/or using measurements of length, width, height, and weight to perform basic math computations correctly - required.
• Basic arithmetic skills to calculate and convert decimals and fractions - required.
