Job summary

Sheridan in Grand Rapids, MI is hiring for a press/finish operator responsible for reading work orders, setting up the press, and folding text and halftone work to meet quality standards. You will monitor throughput, perform make-readies, and perform changeovers efficiently.

Responsibilities include quality inspections, safeties compliance, and coordinating with the Scheduling Team to follow daily run plans. Must have basic math, reading comprehension, and familiarity with substrates and inks.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; related experience/training acceptable.
• One year of printing experience.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders and instructions.

Job description

Print and fold signatures that meet specs on work order to create bindery ready bundles for books that meet or exceed our customers expectations.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Read and understand work order verifying correct substrate , bind type, ink color, and run lengths.
• Learn to interpret the information on the work order and its contents.
• Follow daily running order provided by Scheduling Team.
• Communicate with Supervisor and Scheduling T eam as needed .
• Set up machine and perform quality printing and folding of text and halftone work.
• Maintain high throughput by performing quick and efficient make-readies, job changeovers and folder changeovers.
• Inspect for quality defects ensur ing quality standards are achieved .
• Understand substrate - weights, PPI , size, grain direction , coating, marking and storage .
• Oversee all segments of press operation .
• Ensure bundles conform to b indery needs including proper identification .
• Be sure all waste is disposed of properly including printed and blank substrate , inks, and fountain solution.
• Perform preventative maintenance, general cleaning and upkeep of machine and auxiliary equipment.
• Provide training to Assistant in machine operation and safety ; ensure A ssistant performs duties as necessary .
• Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs to machine and auxiliary equipment.
• Assist maintenance personnel with machine repair .
• Exercise initiative, ask questions and look for ways of improving productivity.
• Keep area safe and clean .
• Adequately c ommunicate with oncoming shift
• Perform end of shift duties leaving area ready for oncoming shift.
• Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications :

• High school Diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience.
• One year of printing experience.
• Ability to read and comprehend instructions .
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as work orders, workplace and safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Basic math skills, add subtract, and ability to use a measuring device.
• Basic problem-solving skills.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently , 20lbs constantly
• Constantly be able to work in the work activities
• Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another,

• Operating machine and/or power tools
• Work in noisy environments
• Occasionally be able to do the listed activities
• Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like
• Moving self in different position to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight spaces
• Remain in stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods
• Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 lbs. in all directions
• Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
• Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned
• Work in high temperatures , small and/or enclosed spaces
