Job summary

At the Channel Islands YMCA, a Preschool Teacher assists in planning, supervising, and implementing childcare programs in line with California Community Care Licensing guidelines. The role involves supervising up to 12 children, guiding behaviors with positive methods, and creating a safe, inclusive environment for all children and families.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 12 units in Child Development or a related field required.
  • 6 months of experience in a childcare setting preferred.
  • Complete required certifications within 60 days of hire.
  • Complete Branch and Position specific trainings within two weeks of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Criminal Record Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, supervising, and implementing childcare programs per California licensing guidelines.
  • Supervise up to 12 children independently; may supervise an assistant or associate teacher with up to 15–18 children.
  • Provide quality care and supervision; create a safe environment for children to thrive.
  • Guide behaviors using positive methods and consider individual needs of each child.
  • Carry out activities and lesson plans; ensure HEPA standards are met.
  • Set up and clean program area; perform basic cleaning tasks.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and build connections with children and families.
  • Participate in in-service trainings and collaborate with staff.
  • Maintain a welcoming, nurturing, and inclusive environment; work respectfully as part of a team.
  • Ensure building, grounds, and equipment are in working order; report concerns.
  • Maintain certifications and pursue professional growth opportunities.
  • Support annual campaign education of members.
  • Understand and act as a mandated reporter for elder and child abuse per policies.
