Job summary

YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas is seeking a Preschool Lead Teacher to supervise an assigned classroom and implement curriculum that supports holistic child development. You will coordinate daily activities, monitor safety, and work with staff to engage members and families.

The role emphasizes professional conduct, confidentiality, and ongoing training. You will collaborate with the Preschool Director and branch administration to ensure high-quality programs and compliance with licensing

Qualifications

• Must be 21+ years old.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred or equivalent experience; meets Virginia Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers.
• Minimum one year of group care experience.
• Minimum one year of staff supervision experience.
• Working knowledge of Virginia Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers.
• CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 certification within 30 days of hire.
• Negative TB test within last two years.
• Complete required trainings: NEO, Bloodborne Pathogens, CAP, Sexual Harassment.
• Criminal background, Virginia State Police, and CPS checks completed.
• MAT certification within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Support the YMCA mission and goals.
• Model caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
• Lead programs that promote youth development, health living and social responsibility.
• Implement developmentally appropriate preschool curriculum.
• Supervise children with sight and sound during shifts.
• Develop daily activity calendars and lesson plans.
• Oversee staff and volunteers following YMCA policies.
• Maintain safe, inviting, and organized learning environments.
• Keep accurate attendance and incident records per licensing.
• Participate in staff meetings and trainings as required.
• Communicate with staff, parents, and directors daily.
• Ensure confidentiality of children and families.
• Promote YMCA fundraising efforts and community engagement.
• Lead in emergencies and follow safety procedures.
• Maintain branch compliance and safety standards.
