Job summary

YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas seeks a Preschool Lead Teacher to supervise and manage an assigned classroom of children, delivering developmentally appropriate activities and lesson plans in alignment with YMCA policies. You will oversee staff, communicate with families, ensure safety and licensing compliance, and contribute to mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Qualifications

• Minimum 21 years of age.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred or equivalent experience; core competency and course work required per the Virginia Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers.
• Minimum one year experience in the group care of children.
• Minimum one year experience in staff supervision.
• Working knowledge of Virginia Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers.
• Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 required within 30 days of hire.
• Proof of a negative TB test within the last two years.
• Complete and maintain required trainings (NEO, Bloodborne Pathogens, CAP, Sexual Harassment).
• Background checks required (criminal, Virginia State Police, CPS).
• MAT Certification within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
• Promote a professional work environment through character development.
• Lead to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
• Implement developmentally appropriate preschool curriculum.
• Supervise children during assigned shift and maintain attendance.
• Develop daily activity calendars and lesson plans.
• Oversee work of staff and volunteers in the classroom.
• Establish an educational, safe and welcoming environment.
• Maintain accurate attendance and incident reports.
• Request supplies as needed.
• Health checks and supervision of children’s hygiene.
• Daily communication with staff, parents and Director.
• Attend staff meetings and training to meet DSS requirements.
• Assist in public relations and parent events.
• Discipline using YMCA policies.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Pursue ongoing professional development.
• May supervise in Director’s absence.
• Maintain clean and organized environments.
• Follow department standards.
• Provide staff training on abuse risk.
• Follow abuse reporting requirements.
• Support fundraising campaigns.
• Act as a leader in emergencies and report incidents.
• Ensure safety of members and participants.
