Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor (Program Aide) to support a nurturing preschool environment. You will assist the Counselor Lead in delivering developmentally appropriate activities, ensuring safety, and fostering children’s growth across cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language domains.

The role emphasizes active supervision, open communication with families, and collaboration with staff to implement engaging curriculum.

Qualifications

• Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills for interacting with children.
• Shall be at least 16 years of age.
• Ability to be on time, every time for scheduled shifts.
• Ability to work at various program locations.
• Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Supervision and safety of children at all times; supervise activities, meals and transitions.
• Assist program leaders in implementing developmentally appropriate curricula and activities.
• Engage children in meaningful play, fostering exploration and learning across domains.
• Support positive behavior guidance and model appropriate conduct.
• Communicate effectively with children, parents/guardians, colleagues, and YMCA leadership.
• Participate in training sessions and professional development.
