Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor (Program Aide) to support a nurturing preschool environment in Virginia Beach. You will assist lead teachers, supervise children, and help implement developmentally appropriate activities that promote learning across multiple domains.

Ideal candidates will be at least 16 years old, possess CPR/First Aid within 30 days of hire, and demonstrate reliable, compassionate interaction with diverse families.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age.
• Under supervision of Program Lead.
• Good character and reputation.
• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Completes all pre-employment requirements including background checks.
• Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills for interacting with children.
• Punctuality and reliability for scheduled shifts.
• Ability to work at various program locations.
• Ability to develop positive relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and ensure safety of children at all times, including meals, activities, and transitions.
• Assist Program Leaders in preparing and implementing curriculum and activities.
• Engage children in meaningful play and learning experiences across cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language domains.
• Support positive behavior guidance and social skills development.
• Communicate effectively with children, families, staff, and YMCA leadership; provide progress feedback.
• Participate in training sessions, staff meetings, and professional development.
