Job summary

University of Maryland's Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR) seeks a maintenance technician to perform semi-skilled lab equipment maintenance and building support at facilities in Rockville and College Park. Duties include preventive and corrective repairs on autoclaves, incubators, shakers, and biosafety cabinets, plus inspections and inventory support.

Qualifications

• Three years related work experience.
• General knowledge of building construction or maintenance and repair practices.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to communicate effectively; to complete logs, work order forms and reports; to adjust, repair and replace fixtures and mechanical equipment; to work around fixed machinery; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to handle heavy equipment up to 70 lbs.
• Ability to work in hazardous environments, confined spaces and adverse weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Performs preventive and corrective repairs on lab equipment such as autoclaves, glass washers, pure water systems, shakers, incubators, environmental chambers, biosafety cabinets and fume hoods, and ice machines.
• Repairs basic plumbing fixtures, pipes and fittings, changes filters and hoses.
• Assists journey level personnel in skilled maintenance and repairs.
• Conducts scheduled and unscheduled inspections for buildings and lab equipment; notes deficiencies and initiates corrective actions; may coordinate with contractors; assists with shipping/receiving of lab equipment.
• Assist in preparing lab components and systems for journey level personnel or contractors for removal/installation; relocates equipment and furniture for renovations.
• Provides equipment inventory support: physical inventory, surplus records, and disposal coordination.
