Job summary

The University of Texas is seeking a Scientific Instrument Maker II at UT Austin to fabricate, assemble, and repair precise instruments for research and teaching projects. You will use milling machines and related tools with initiative and independent judgment from sketches or verbal instructions.

Responsibilities include operating lathes and mills, laying out fabrication processes, and assembling components while verifying conformance to designs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; three years of machinist or instrument maker experience beyond apprentice level.
• Experience with lathe, milling machines, shaper, planer, drill press, welding equipment, micrometers, and other precision measuring devices.
• Preferred proficiency with Outlook, Excel and Access.

Responsibilities

• Operate lathes and milling machines to create instruments from designs.
• Lay out and plan complicated fabrication processes and implement designs.
• Measure and assemble parts; attach electronic equipment to assure conformity to standards and designs.
• May assist researchers in planning overall design, development and use.
