Job summary

CMI Group in Phoenix, AZ is seeking a Lapping (Lap) Machine Operator for our Defense & Aerospace machine shop. The role finishes aircraft components to micro-inch tolerances using lapping, polishing, and honing processes.

You will set up equipment, mix slurries, inspect with micrometers and bore gauges, read drawings or CAD models, and collaborate with QA to optimize cycle times. Requires 40+ hour weeks, ITAR compliance as a U.S.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1–5+ years of close-tolerance manual machining or grinding in aerospace.
• Solid GD&T understanding.
• ITAR compliance: must be a U.S. Person.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate lapping, polishing, and honing machines.
• Mix and apply correct abrasive compounds and slurries per specs.
• Use micrometers, bore gauges, and air gauges for precision inspection.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings and CAD models.
• Compute clearances and material removal to maintain tolerances.
• Deburr and package finished aerospace parts.
• Collaborate with QA and manufacturing to improve efficiency.
