Job summary

Southwest Allen County Schools seeks a classroom assistant to support students in both special and general education settings. You will prepare instructional materials, help implement IEPs, and participate in community activities to build life and vocational skills.

The 9-month, AM-only role requires 3 hours per day with a half-hour unpaid lunch and PTO eligibility. Lifting and possible van driving may be required, with duties assigned by the Special Education Office.

Qualifications

• Completion of two years of study (60+ hours) at an institution of higher education or associate degree preferred.
• Previous experience as a classroom assistant desirable.
• Effective communication skills.
• Must be able to lift 50+ pounds.
• Lift test will be required.
• May drive a special education van with students (2-6) with additional supervision.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct and indirect support to promote student learning.
• Prepare instructional materials according to the teacher's direction to implement IEPs.
• Attend community-based instructional activities to help students build life/vocational skills.
• Assist with personal needs of students as directed (e.g., bathroom assistance).
• Assist with transitions into wheelchairs, physical therapy equipment and bus as needed.
