Pre-Construction Manager, AMER Central Data Center Construction

As Pre-Construction Managers, we are responsible for planning the construction of Amazon’s new sites nationwide. We are at the forefront of creating and delivering innovative products to our customers and are known for pushing the boundaries of cloud computing.

Role Description

As a Pre-Construction Manager, you will support the development and execution of a Pre-Construction program across multiple campuses nationwide. This role acts as the primary liaison between Real Estate, Design Engineering, Due Diligence, and other key teams, from initial planning through design development. Your responsibilities include schedule forecasting, construction budgeting, and providing constructability guidance. We seek candidates with extensive practical construction experience in bidding, contracting, construction documents, infrastructure, design, and engineering.

Key Responsibilities

1. Understand critical data center equipment (Generators, UPS, Switchgear, Transformers, Power Feeders & Busduct, Chillers, Plumbing, Fire Detection/Suppression, Air Handling Units, CRAC units).
2. Conduct constructability reviews for new data center buildings and sites, proposing improvements to baseline plans.
3. Evaluate build phasing in civil, structural, and electrical disciplines for potential sites.
4. Identify and communicate site requirements impacting schedule, cost, and integration with surrounding properties.
5. Negotiate with land sellers, developers, and general contractors; evaluate bids, proposals, and scoping documents.
6. Manage General Contractors and third-party vendors during the design phase.
7. Define construction scopes and solicit proposals from GCs, reviewing bids, schedules, milestones, and pricing.
8. Support the issuance of contracting documents such as Work Orders, Purchase Orders, and Work Letters.
9. Develop project handoff documentation for Construction Managers.
10. Share lessons learned to promote continuous improvement across teams.
11. Travel up to 25% of the time.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or related STEM field.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in data center construction, mission-critical facilities, or equivalent industrial builds.
• Experience managing end-to-end construction projects.
• Ability to develop new concepts through exploration, design, testing, and deployment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree such as a Master of Science in Engineering or Construction Management.
• Certifications like PE, Licensed Architect, or CCM.
• 8+ years’ experience in data center or critical infrastructure design/construction.
• Experience managing large infrastructure projects with multiple vendors.
• Knowledge of building codes and regulations (Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, OSHA). Experience in controls, commissioning, power management, and business case analysis.
