Job summary

Roush in Allen Park, MI is seeking a Powertrain Product Engineer I to design and release powertrain hardware. You will work on ICE, EV propulsion, fuel systems, and exhaust, with on-site collaboration across engineering teams.

You will develop 3D models, perform analyses, validate designs, and support prototypes and production launches while coordinating with suppliers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Ability to read technical prints and assembly instructions (GD&T familiarity).
  • Experience with DFMEA and DVP&R documents.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams while handling multiple tasks.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Apply engineering analysis to create new component designs meeting requirements.
  • Develop 3D models and 2D prints with CAD resources.
  • Coordinate with CAE to validate designs.
  • Develop hardware test plans and document results.
  • Interface with suppliers to deliver prototype parts and production solutions.
  • Support prototype, pre-production builds and production launches.

The Powertrain Product Engineer I role will be responsible for component and sub-system design & release of powertrain hardware. The role is supported by project team members and department staff. This role is onsite full-time in Allen Park, MI.

Powertrain functional responsibilities may vary on an individual project basis, but typical assignments include work on these main systems:

  • Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) components and sub-systems for gasoline, diesel, or gaseous fuel applications
  • Air induction & filtration
  • Exhaust & aftertreatment systems (pipe & muffler, catalysts, isolation, etc.)
  • Fuel systems (storage / supply) for gasoline, diesel, or gaseous fuel (CNG, LPG) applications
  • Powertrain thermal systems (engine cooling and HVAC)
  • EV propulsion systems and power electronics hardware
AsaPowertrain Product Engineer I, you will:
  • Apply relevant engineering analysis to create new component & subsystem designs to meet customer requirements
  • Work with CAD resources to develop 3D models and 2D prints
  • Coordinate withCAE resources to analytically validate designs
  • Develop & execute hardware test plans to validate function while maintaining relevant DVP&R documentation:
    • Process data
    • Document test results
    • Report on status both internally as well as externally to customers
  • Interface and coordinate with suppliers to deliver both prototype parts and production solutions
  • Support prototype and pre-production build events
  • Support production launch for responsible components/systems
To be considered a Powertrain Product Engineer I, you will need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related degree
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future employer sponsorship
  • Have a willingness to switch disciplines as needed, as this is critical for success in this role
  • High mechanical aptitude, working knowledge of generic product development tasks from inception to production and basic understanding of all powertrain subsystems:
    • IC engines
    • EV powertrain systems and components
    • Air induction & filtration
    • Exhaust & aftertreatment systems
    • Fuel systems (gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuels such as CNG & LPG)
    • Powertrain thermal systems (engine cooling, battery thermal managementand HVAC)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical prints and assembly instructions (including a working knowledge of GD&T)
  • Familiarity with DFMEA and DVP&R documents
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and problem- solving skills
  • Ability to work both independently and in team settings while handling multiple assignments simultaneously
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Preferred Experience & Skills:
  • Willingness and ability to learn "on the fly" with minimal structured training (i.e. self directed)
  • Collegiate experience in a team such as Formula SAE (IC,hybrid or electric) or Baja working the powertrain related subsystems
  • Hands-on experience around powertrain hardware (personal projects / routine maintenance, etc.)
  • Ability to handle new, and sometimes unfamiliar technical assignments with minimal guidance
  • General understanding of prototype as well asproduction manufacturing and assembly processes (ex. low and high volume fabrication and machining methodologies)
  • Basic 3D CAD software capabilities (to be able to generate initial basic design concepts/sketches)
  • Prior experience with OEM automotive, military, commercial truck, or agricultural powertrain engineering systems and processes (co-op or full-time)
