Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 4+ years of progressive experience in transmission planning or system studies.
  • Experience performing steady-state, transient stability, and short-circuit analyses with industry-standard software (PSSE, PSLF, TARA, ETAP, ASPEN).
  • Working knowledge of NERC reliability standards, including TPL, FAC, PRC, and CIP series.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or active pursuit of licensure.

  • Collaborate with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and developers to ensure interconnection and reliability processes.

Overview

Kimley-Horn's Atlanta, Georgia (GA) is seeking an experienced Power Systems Studies Engineer to join our team in Midtown Atlanta. You'll play a central role in conducting advanced transmission system analyses, supporting generator interconnection studies, and ensuring reliability and compliance with applicable NERC standards. This position is best suited for engineers who excel in problem-solving, collaboration, and technical excellence within a dynamic consulting environment. This is not a remote position.

Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain detailed transmission network models for steady-state, dynamic stability, and short-circuit analysis using PSSE, PSLF, TARA, ETAP, ASPEN, or equivalent tools.
  • Perform power flow, contingency, transient stability, voltage stability, and short-circuit simulations to assess system performance and develop recommendations.
  • Support generator interconnection evaluations for both conventional and inverter-based resources, including BESS, solar, wind, and hybrid facilities.
  • Perform studies and prepare documentation for Feasibility, System Impact, and Facility Studies under SGIP/LGIP or equivalent frameworks.
  • Conduct analyses in accordance with NERC transmission planning and protection standards, including:
    • FAC-008 (Facility Ratings)
    • PRC-010 (Under-Voltage Load Shedding Programs)
    • CIP-014 (Physical Security)
  • Other applicable TPL, MOD, and PRC standards relevant to planning and protection compliance.
  • Review and interpret study results, identify system limitations or reliability risks, and propose technical solutions or mitigation measures.
  • Collaborate with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and developers to ensure compliance with interconnection and reliability processes.
  • Contribute to internal procedures, data management practices, and study standardization initiatives supporting reliability compliance.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 4+ years of progressive experience in transmission planning, system studies, or related power system engineering roles.
  • Demonstrated experience performing steady-state, transient stability, and short-circuit analyses with industry-standard software (PSSE, PSLF, TARA, ETAP, ASPEN).
  • Working knowledge of NERC reliability standards, including TPL, FAC, PRC, and CIP series.
  • Understanding of interconnection study processes and planning requirements across ERCOT, PJM, MISO, ISO-NE, NYISO etc...
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, with experience delivering client-ready reports and presentations.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience supporting compliance or study work under FAC-008, PRC-010, and CIP-014.
    • Knowledge of UVLS, UFLS, or other protection coordination programs under PRC standards.
    • Experience conducting System Impact or Facility Studies for transmission-connected resources.
    • Professional Engineer (PE) license or active pursuit of licensure.
    • Prior consulting experience or demonstrated success leading client-focused technical projects.
