Overview

Kimley-Horn's Atlanta, Georgia (GA)office is seeking a Power Systems Studies Engineer specializing in electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling and studies. This position focuses on advanced system phenomena across utility and developer projects, leveraging PSCAD, ETAP, EMTP, and related simulation tools. The ideal candidate thrives on challenging transient phenomena and is experienced supporting major interconnection, grid integration, and reliability compliance studies in a consulting or engineering environment. This is not a remote position.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain EMT system models for transmission and generation equipment using PSCAD, ETAP, EMTP, or similar software platforms.
  • Lead and execute studies analyzing Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV), Temporary Overvoltage, Transient Overvoltage, and comprehensive insulation coordination for transmission and substation systems.
  • Perform pre- and post-energization harmonics investigations to ensure safe system integration and grid performance.
  • Design and conduct Sub-synchronous Resonance (SSR) and Sub-synchronous Control Interference (SSCI) studies to evaluate system risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Document findings and prepare technical reports for clients, internal stakeholders, and regulatory submission.
  • Support integration modeling for inverter-based resources (wind, solar, BESS), including control interaction mapping and EMT studies.
  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure robust EMT model development, validation, and scenario analysis for utility, developer, and ISO/RTO clients.
  • Assist with advancement of internal process standards and best practices for EMT modeling and transient studies.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience in power system studies focusing on EMT modeling and transients.
  • Proficient with PSCAD, ETAP, EMTP, and other EMT simulation platforms.
  • Direct experience performing TRV, Temporary Overvoltage, Transient Overvoltage, and insulation coordination studies for transmission and substation projects.
  • Strong background in harmonics analysis and pre/post energization transient modeling.
  • Knowledge of SSR and SSCI risk assessment methodologies.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience conducting Sub-synchronous Resonance (SSR) and Sub-synchronous Controls Interaction (SSCI) studies in support of major interconnections or operational assessments.
    • Familiarity with ISO/RTO study processes (CAISO, ERCOT, PJM, MISO, ISO-NE, NYISO) for EMT and transient analysis.
    • Professional Engineer (PE) license or active pursuit thereof.
    • Demonstrated history of delivering high-impact technical solutions, client reports, and model validation workflows.
    • Prior consulting experience or leadership in cross-functional technical teams.
