Job summary

Job description

Position Summary

This position operates the Centralized Power Plant as the only employee on shift, and is responsible for complete operation of a full range of equipment used in the generation of steam heat by high pressure gas fueled boilers. Functions independently during periods when the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds is not available and performs other maintenance duties as assigned.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range 03-15 with a salary of $27.91 per hour.

Job Details

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, or an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens. Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency of employment.

The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.

Note: Candidates must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin in order to be considered.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have:

  • Knowledge of gas, and oil fires, steam boilers, steam flow meters, water meters, pressure gauges, temperature gauges and automatic boiler controls.
  • Knowledge of the operations and use of safety devices and Personal Protective equipment (PPE).
  • Knowledge of feed water heaters, feed water pumps, and forced draft fans.
  • Skill in making repairs and adjustments on all power plant equipment.
  • Knowledge of electric generators, electronic panels and electrical distribution.
  • Knowledge of power plant occupational hazards and safety precautions of high-pressure power plant operations.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, Department of Commerce and DNR rules governing power plant operators and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of boiler and auxiliary equipment such as compressors, blowers and fuel pumps, water and vacuum pumps and steam condensers.
  • Knowledge of the proper and safe use of a wide variety of hand and power tools and motorized equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, climb, bend, crawl, etc.
  • Ability to diagnose systems common to power plants, their maintenance and minor repairs.
