A Power Equipment Technician is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions:
  • Repairs passenger cars, light, medium and heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment as well as a variety of non-automotive power equipment.
  • Diagnoses defects and overhauls major automotive components such as gasoline, alternative fuel vehicles, hybrids, and diesel engines, clutches, transmissions, brakes, front and rear axles, fuel, cooling and electrical systems.
  • Replaces or repairs worn or broken parts of equipment and installs accessories.
  • Road tests various types of automotive, light medium and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment.
  • Uses computers to access equipment information and store work records.
  • Inspects automotive equipment to determine cause of malfunction.
  • Performs preventive maintenance services and inspections on equipment and makes recommendations for vehicle repairs.
  • Supervises helpers as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSOPTION I -Completion of a recognized four-year apprentice-training program* in automotive equipment repair** -OR- OPTION II - Completion of an automotive or heavy-duty, off-road repair program from an accredited community college or vocational school of at least two years duration** -OR- OPTION III - Five years of experience in automotive or heavy duty, diesel engine, off-road equipment repair, one year of which must have been at the journey level***.
*A recognized training program such as vocational schools, trade schools and community colleges.
*** Journey-level staff are assigned the full-range and diversity of work and may operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.

LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. A valid California Class A or B Driver License may be required for some positions in this class.

PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class IV – Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

**Applicants expecting to qualify under completion of a recognized four-year apprentice-training program in automotive equipment repair or completion of an automotive or heavy duty, off-road repair program from an accredited community college or vocational school of at least two years duration MUST attach a copy of the certificate confirming successful completion of the required training at time of filing. Applications submitted without the required documents will be rejected as incomplete. If you are unable to attach required documents, you must email them to sstewart@dpw.lacounty.gov within five (5) business days of filing for open continuous exams.
EXAMINATION CONTENT:

This examination will consist of TWO (2) parts:

PART I : A multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted at 40%, assessing:

  • Mechanical Comprehension

MULTIPLE CHOICE TESTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

PART II: An evaluation of training and experience, weighted 60%, assessing:

    • Repair and Modification Methods, Principles, and Techniques

MULTIPLE CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENT(S) ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.


APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE COMBINED EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS:


Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their responses automatically transferred to this examination. This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test responses may be transferred.

Study guides and other test preparation resources are available to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides will help you prepare for the test, we advise you to review all related materials that you deem necessary.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
