Job summary

Bitovi is seeking a PostgreSQL Database Consultant to join our team and help enterprise clients stabilize large self-managed PostgreSQL environments. You will diagnose issues, tune performance, and implement durable fixes across production systems.

You’ll work remotely within the United States, travel 3–5 days per quarter, and collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable data platforms. This role demands deep PostgreSQL expertise and strong incident response skills.

Qualifications

• Deep production experience administering PostgreSQL on self-managed on-premises infrastructure.
• Expert knowledge of vacuum and autovacuum: tuning thresholds and cost limits, diagnosing and remediating table/index bloat.
• Strong indexing expertise across B-tree, GIN, GiST, BRIN, including identifying missing/unused/duplicate indexes.
• Mastery of PostgreSQL configuration: memory settings, connections, checkpoints, WAL, planner parameters; ability to audit and justify changes.
• Query performance analysis using EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS) and pg_stat_statements.
• Experience with replication and high availability (streaming and logical replication, Patroni, repmgr) and failover testing.
• Backup/restore and point-in-time recovery experience (pgBackRest, Barman).
• Connection pooling with PgBouncer or Pgpool-II.
• Monitoring/alerting for Postgres (Prometheus postgres_exporter, pgwatch).
• Strong Linux administration skills related to DB hosts: storage, filesystems, kernel params.
• Incident response and root cause analysis with postmortems and remediation plans.

Responsibilities

• Stabilize and audit critical systems across enterprise PostgreSQL environments.
• Tune vacuum strategy, indexing, queries, and configuration for production load.
• Prevent recurrence with monitoring, alerting, and runbooks.
• Consult with clients to build outcome-driven platforms and address unknowns.
• Travel up to 3–5 days per quarter; remote-first collaboration approach.
• Teach and present at conferences or trainings for knowledge sharing.
