Job summary

Description

The School of Oceanography at the University of Washington is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar with a background in morphodynamic modeling to work with Dr. Kendall Valentine. The postdoctoral scholar will work on the development of idealized ecogeomorphic marsh models for the Pacific Northwest region as a part of an NSF-funded project.

The successful candidate will work on model development (Matlab), fieldwork (including sediment coring, elevation surveying, and vegetation sampling, model experiments, writing of manuscripts and dissemination of results.

This position is full-time (100% FTE), 12- months/year, with an initial term appointment of one year (12 months), renewable depending on funding and/or satisfactory performance for a total period of up to 2 years. The salary for this position will be $7,488 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. The start date is negotiable, but the position is available from November 1, 2026, with a preference to fill the position no later than January 1, 2027. The review process will commence starting September 9, 2026 and will continue until filled.

Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.

Postdoctoral scholars are engaged in full‑time, mentored advanced training to enhance professional skills and research independence. Given the close mentoring relationship necessitated by the nature of postdoctoral scholar appointments; access to the full university community to support individual development; and, if applicable, visa sponsorship requirements, postdoctoral scholars must be physically present at their place of work on University property to fulfill their appointment duties.

Qualifications

University of Washington postdoctoral scholar appointments are for a temporary, defined period not to exceed five years/60 months, including any previous postdoctoral experience. At the time of their appointment, candidates must have a Ph.D. in an applicable field such as Oceanography, Geology, Earth Sciences, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Coastal Engineering, or related fields. The successful candidate will have a strong background in numerical modeling and coding (Matlab preferred, Python OK) and demonstrated ability to communicate research findings evidenced through peer‑reviewed manuscripts and conference presentations. Highly desirable additional areas of expertise include experience working with community members and stakeholders, expertise with salt marsh dynamics, experience mentoring more junior students and trainees, ability to lift and move field equipment (up to 50 pounds), and have a valid driver’s license.
