Job summary

Qualifications

  • Background in bacterial engineering, anaerobic bacterial physiology, or microbiology of infectious diseases.
  • Experience in bioinformatics, gut microbiome analysis and other omics technologies.
  • Previous research experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Microsoft Office and data analysis software; R Studio is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Characterize bacteria for their ability to alter bile acids and compete against C. difficile for the same nutrients.
  • Bioengineer bacteria to manipulate bile acid and amino acid metabolism in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Study mechanisms of colonization resistance against enteric pathogens, specifically C. difficile, using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models.
  • Design targeted therapeutics against C. difficile and precision probiotics to manipulate the gut microbiota.
  • Contribute to publications, presentations, and funding opportunities.

Position Overview

The mission of the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology is to recruit, train, inspire, and graduate Doctors of Veterinary Medicine of exemplary knowledge, skill, and character. The department’s faculty advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, inspired mentoring of students, excellence in clinical and diagnostic services, and innovative extension and engagement activities. North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is a dynamic community that prepares veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems. The college is ranked 3rd among the nation’s 28 veterinary medicine colleges. The postdoctoral scientist position (1+ year) is available in Prof. Casey Theriot’s group at NCSU CVM, focused on studying gut microbiota and antimicrobial resistance.

Essential Job Duties
  • Characterize bacteria for their ability to alter bile acids and compete against C. difficile for the same nutrients.

  • Previous research experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to adhere to tight deadlines and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Computer literacy with Microsoft Office and data analysis software; R studio is a plus.
Work Schedule

40‑hour work week and some weekends if needed.

Compensation

Anticipated hiring range: $70,000.
