Job summary

NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a postdoctoral scientist to study gut microbiota and antimicrobial resistance in Prof. Casey Theriot’s group. The role focuses on engineering bacteria and exploring colonization resistance in the GI tract, with emphasis on C.

difficile and biosynthetic pathways. Ideal candidates hold a PhD in a related field, possess strong computational/communication skills, and have experience in bioinformatics, gut microbiome analysis, and bacterial

Qualifications

  • PhD in bioinformatics, microbiology, biochemistry, or related field.
  • Strong computational and communication skills.
  • Background in bacterial engineering, anaerobic bacterial physiology, or microbiology of infectious diseases.
  • Experience in bioinformatics, gut microbiome analysis and other omics technologies.
  • Previous research experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Microsoft Office and data analysis software; R Studio is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Characterize bacteria for their ability to alter bile acids and compete against C. difficile for the same nutrients.
  • Bioengineer bacteria to manipulate bile acid and amino acid metabolism in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Study mechanisms of colonization resistance against enteric pathogens, specifically C. difficile, using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models.
  • Design targeted therapeutics against C. difficile and precision probiotics to manipulate the gut microbiota.
  • Contribute to publications, presentations, and funding opportunities.
