PREP Research Associate – CHIPS Funded Project

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST supports collaboration between its research staff and academic institutions on projects of mutual interest, and requires institutions to receive a PREP award. The PREP program brings together people from a wide range of scientific fields to conduct research of national importance. In this role, you will perform technical work supporting this collaboration.

Research Title: Nanocalorimetry Sensor Design and Fabrication

U.S. Citizen Preferred

The Materials Measurement Laboratory (MML) of NIST is seeking qualified persons (U.S. Citizens Preferred) to join a multidisciplinary team that is advancing the state-of-the-art in nanocalorimetry. You will work closely with leaders on this multi-effort project and will personally develop and fabricate new sensor designs optimized for a variety of applications, including characterization of thin film materials and in‑situ monitoring of plasmas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with other project team members to design new nanocalorimetry sensors for multiple applications
  • Use Finite Element Analysis to model the thermal and mechanical behavior of sensor designs prior to fabrication
  • Fabricate sensors in the NIST Nanofab
  • Utilize multiple techniques to determine the mass of samples prior to thermal analysis
  • Perform nanocalorimetry experiments and conduct subsequent data analysis to extract material properties as needed
  • Publish results in peer‑reviewed scientific journals and present results at scientific conferences
Qualifications

U.S. Citizen is preferred. Applicants should have a background in materials science, physics, or a related field and experience with finite element analysis or sensor fabrication. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong analytical and experimental skills.

Salary Range

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on location, experience, and other factors.
