The Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at The George Washington University is well known for its teaching and research accomplishments. The Department and the University provide a stimulating academic environment and collaborative research opportunities. The Department offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Systems Engineering as well as M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees in Engineering Management.

The department’s location in the nation’s capital offers unique cultural and professional opportunities. Major government agencies such as NIH , NIST , FDA , Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, NSF , and the Federal Reserve Board.

This is a very specialized task involving advanced research and coding knowledge. A postdoctoral scholar must hold a PhD or equivalent degree. Scholar will assist Professor Caitlin Grady’s research on critical infrastructure networks, food security, sustainability, and landscape scale statistics ( www.fewslab.org ). This includes collecting, preparing, and analyzing research data; keeping a detailed notebook summarizing experiments and recording research data; maintaining a computer database of research data; tabulating and displaying data for presentation in research conferences and for manuscript preparation; using graphics and statistical software to analyze and present data; searching pertinent scientific literature as needed.

A Postdoctoral Associate

• holds a PhD or equivalent degree;
• develops skills by participating in scholarly projects that are actively mentored by a member of the university faculty;
• receives financial support in the form of a salary that is typically funded by grants, contracts or departmental funds secured by a faculty mentor; and
• has a limited term of up to five years at GW.
  
  

In collaboration with experienced researchers, this role will participate in the planning and conduction of discovery research, data analysis and interpretation, preparation of materials for publication, presentations at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This role can expect timely advice as to research directions and career planning for a future independent career.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires Ph.D. in public health or a related field (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics, data science, etc.). A strong background in quantitative/qualitative methodology, writing, and engagement in self-directed and guided research are required. Ability to meet deadlines and efficiently multitask is also required.

Desired Qualifications

PhD in Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geography, or any social science discipline such as Sociology with specialization in infrastructure and/or climate change.

Hiring Range $61,008 - $95,000
