Job summary

The University of Washington seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to lead an interdisciplinary study on ecological drivers of SRKW habitat use. The role focuses on integrating eDNA, oceanographic, and passive acoustic data to improve ecosystem-based assessments and management actions for SRKWs.

Located in Seattle, you will work with UW SAFS, NOAA NWFSC, and CICOES, expanding bioinformatic workflows and publishing results while collaborating with a diverse team of scientists and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Biology, Molecular Genetics, Fisheries Science, Statistics or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated skills in molecular genetic and genomic techniques (DNA/RNA extractions, qPCR/ddPCR, NGS library prep, Illumina sequencing).
  • Experience with large-scale NGS data analysis (bioinformatics).
  • Proficiency in bioinformatic analyses in R, Python, or similar languages.

Responsibilities

  • Expand bioinformatic approaches to process eDNA metabarcoding and qPCR datasets.
  • Quantify fish prey communities and map predator-prey distributions with oceanographic variables.
  • Develop a unified statistical detection model for killer whales using multi-modal data.
  • Lead peer-reviewed publications and present findings in meetings.
