Job summary

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to investigate material reactions and interface evolution through high-temperature experiments and quantitative EPMA. You will design diffusion-couple and thermomechanical tests, including Gleeble-based work, and characterize gradients and phase evolution using EPMA and complementary methods.

The role emphasizes thermodynamics, phase equilibria, and kinetics, with collaboration across materials characterization,

Qualifications

  • PhD in materials science, metallurgy, ceramic science, geology, geochemistry or related field.
  • Experience with EPMA/WDS or quantitative electron-beam microanalysis techniques.
  • Experience designing and conducting high-temperature experiments.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance (U.S. citizenship).

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute high-temperature materials experiments using established and developing methods.
  • Design and conduct diffusion-couple, thermomechanical, and heat-treatment experiments, including Gleeble systems or similar equipment.
  • Prepare, characterize, and analyze samples using quantitative EPMA, including WDS and compositional mapping.
  • Collect and interpret experimental data on composition, processing conditions, phases, and microstructure.
  • Apply thermodynamic, phase equilibria and kinetic principles to interpret material behavior.
