Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory seeks a Materials Scientist Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group. The role focuses on characterization of inorganic solids, polymers, coatings, and uranium-containing materials using SEM, BET, XRD, Raman, FTIR, and rheological analysis.

You will work independently and collaboratively to advance materials development and support program objectives. The position requires a Ph.D.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with chemical or physical characterization techniques.
  • Experience with inorganic materials and with organic/polymeric materials.
  • Ability to lead a project from conception to development and execution.
  • Proven self-motivation and technical leadership.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently under milestones.
  • Strong written and verbal communication under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Apply and develop characterization techniques such as SEM, BET, XRD, Raman, FTIR, and rheological analysis for inorganic and organic materials.
  • Study reaction mechanisms and gas/solid interfaces including uranium metal corrosion.
  • Characterize polymers, resins, coatings, and complex formulations to support development and QC.
  • Design, assemble, and operate experimental systems under ambient and vacuum conditions.
  • Contribute to internal and sponsor reports or peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Work unsupervised on projects and contribute to team efforts, guiding direction when needed.
