Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher with Materials Science experience to drive work on high-temperature composites, including oxide-oxide, non-oxide, and carbon-carbon fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites.

The role involves synthesis, advanced microstructure characterization, property evaluation, and continuum modeling of thermal and mechanical behavior. A 9x80 schedule is in place at the Idaho Falls facility with collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline; must be completed by appointment start.
• Experience with ceramic materials processing, sintering, and phase diagrams.
• Strong background in microstructure characterization and high-temperature composite behavior.
• Ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently and in teams.

Responsibilities

• Conduct hands-on research in high-temperature ceramic/ceramic and carbon-carbon composite systems.
• Provide project management support for time-constrained experiments and studies.
• Characterize materials using SEM, TEM, XRD, and mechanical testing; interpret results.
• Develop models to understand sintering behavior and microstructural evolution.
• Collaborate with INL researchers and external partners to advance materials for harsh environments.
• Prepare and publish findings; contribute to proposals and project reports.
