Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Organic Chemistry and/or Critical Materials Separation Science to develop ligands and sorbents for gallium, germanium, and other critical minerals. You will perform organic synthesis, materials characterization, solvent extraction, and solid-phase separations in the Nanomaterials Chemistry Group at ORNL.

The role involves designing ligands, conducting adsorption-based separations, and utilizing analytical techniques

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in organic or inorganic or polymer chemistry, materials science or a related field completed within the last 5 years.

Responsibilities

• Design and synthesize organic ligands, functionalization of resins, polymers.
• Design and execute adsorption based solid-liquid and liquid-liquid separation experiments.
• Characterize materials using NMR, MS, FT-IR, TGA, DSC, XRD, BET, SEM.
• Perform ion separation experiments and determine ion concentrations with ICP.
• Collaborate with ORNL staff, university collaborators, and industry partners.
• Participate in project planning and execution; present results at meetings and conferences.
• Publish results in peer-reviewed journals; ensure compliance with safety and quality programs.
