Post-Doctoral Researcher-DoDVLS to support the Department of Defense Virtual Lab School (DoDVLS) team within the Department of Human Sciences!
Position Overview
The position of Post-Doctoral Researcher - DoDVLS offers an opportunity for an expert in childhood development and education to contribute to research broadly aligned with the aims of the DoD Child Development Virtual Laboratory School project at The Ohio State University around supporting the development and well-being of child and youth care and education workforce. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in research coordination and grant development for a variety of projects, potentially including pilot-testing of tracks and courses and examining the efficacy and effectiveness of the DoDVLS within community-based settings.
Key activities for the Post-Doctoral Researcher – DoDVLS include conceptualizing and designing research projects broadly aligned with the aims of the DoDVLS, supporting the preparation of and maintaining research- and grant-related documentation, collecting and analyzing research data using a variety of methods (quantitative and qualitative), and helping to hire, train, and oversee research assistants. A large focus of this role is on the analysis and dissemination of existing DoDVLS-related data through the submission of conference proposals and academic manuscripts in partnership with the DoDVLS Principal Investigator (PI) and Associate Director of Research. This position will also include opportunities for the selected candidate to engage in additional mentored activities (e.g., teaching, practicum supervision, interdisciplinary research) as relevant to the Post-Doctoral Researcher’s interests and career goals.
Position Environment
The Post-Doctoral Researcher – DoDVLS will join a dynamic and mission-driven team housed within the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University. Our team is highly collaborative and customer-focused, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment where all members contribute flexibly across projects to advance shared goals.
The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with university faculty, staff, and project stakeholders, and will report to the project’s Associate Director of Research while also working closely with the Principal Investigator. This is a primarily in-person, office-based position located on Ohio State’s main campus in Columbus, Ohio. Occasional travel and engagement in community-based settings may be required as part of the role.
Performance Objectives
In the first 60 to 90 days of employment, the successful candidate for this position will accomplish the following:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of DoDVLS, college, and university policies and procedures
- Establish pivotal relationships within the DoDVLS client groups, college, and across the university’s child development and research resource units
- Develop an in-depth understanding of current DoDVLS data collection and analysis processes as well as the current research project management practices
A long-term goal of this role is to write manuscripts for publishing in alignment with PI, Associate Director of Research, and project needs.
Targeted Compensation Range
The Targeted Hiring Range for this position is $62,000 to $64,000.
Experience Requirements
The selected candidate for this position will have demonstrated success in several areas, including the following required and preferred qualifications.
Required Qualifications
- A Doctoral Degree in child development, development psychology, human development and family science, early childhood education, or an appropriate area or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrate expert-level knowledge in early childhood development and education and/or positive youth development
- Experience conducting and disseminating social science research, including:
- Analyzing quantitative and qualitative data
- Writing for scholarly and applied audiences
- Delivering presentations to diverse stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of and experience with instructional technology and online learning platforms
- Familiarity with the principles and delivery of practice-based coaching
- Experience providing professional development to practicing child and youth care professionals
- Experience administering the CLASS, ITERS/ECERS/FCCERS or other observational tools related to measuring the quality of early childhood settings and teaching practices
- Proficiency with SPSS, Mplus, and at least one other statistical software program (e.g., R, STATA)
- Demonstrated experience accessing, preparing, and analyzing secondary data
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated adaptability and initiative, including the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, team-oriented environment
- Commitment to equity and inclusion in research, practice, and professional interactions

Created by experts at The Ohio State University, the Virtual Lab School (VLS) addresses a critical need for an easy-to-navigate online professional development and resource system that empowers professionals to build their knowledge and skills around research-based practices in child care and youth development. Supported by an extensive repository of professional development videos, research-based content, and relevant, interactive learning materials, the VLS simulates the enriching learning experiences found in university lab school settings.
The VLS system offers distinct tracks for center-based professionals including direct-care providers (infant/toddler, preschool, school-age, and youth), training and curriculum specialists (coaches), and management personnel, as well as a track for home-based care providers who typically care for mixed-age groups. Anchored by 15 Foundational courses that include the 13 Functional Areas of the Child Development Associate competency standards used in early care settings around the world, the Foundational Content covers research-based developmentally appropriate practices for working with children from birth to age 12 across all the functional roles in child and youth care and education settings.
In addition to the Foundational Courses, the VLS features a series of focused topics and other resources that support the development of a highly trained and effective workforce.
