RiverView Health in Crookston, MN is seeking a Hospital Coder with RHIT/CPC to join our team on a full-time basis. The coder will assign ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT codes for hospital stays, ensuring accurate coding, proper reimbursement, and compliant documentation across departments.

This hybrid eligible position requires adherence to coding guidelines and ongoing education, with a Monday–Friday schedule and a pay range of $25.69–$33.24 per hour.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to acquire RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CCA, CCS, or CCS-P within 1 year of employment.
  • Preferred: current certification in RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CCA, CCS, or CCS-P
  • 2+ years of coding experience in hospital or outpatient settings
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Sciences, or related field

Responsibilities

  • Abstracts pertinent information from patient records and assigns ICD-9/10 CM or HCPCS codes for billing.
  • Queries physicians when coding is unclear or documentation is inadequate for coding.
  • Assist with bill problem resolution and communicate guidelines for billable services.
  • Assist in the hospital charge master with coding guidelines and Riverview policies.
  • Collaborate with clinical directors to implement CDM changes.
  • Assist with department charge masters for hospital and clinics.
  • Stay current with coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to ethical coding standards and all guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

RiverView Health, is a community owned, membership based non-profit organization that was formed in 1898 and continues to be the sole community hospital in Crookston, MN.

RiverView Health operates a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital, RiverView Recovery Center; a chemical dependency outpatient treatment program, RiverView Home Care and five primary care and specialty clinics in the hospitals service area.

Responsibilities

Hospital Coder - RHIT, CPC (full-time)

Position Status: Non-Exempt – Full-Time (1.0 fte); subject to over-time

Location:Hybrid eligible, based on experience and training/orientation

Schedule:Monday – Friday

Pay Range: $25.69 - $33.24 /per hour (DOE - based on experience/certification status) - benefitted

TheHospital Coderis responsible for accurately assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures performed during a patient's hospital stay, utilizing classification systems such as ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT. As a Hospital Coder, you play a vital role in ensuring that every medical service a patient receives during their hospital stay is accurately documented and translated into universal healthcare codes. This role plays a critical part in the healthcare revenue cycle, ensuring proper reimbursement, accurate data for research and public health reporting, and compliance with all coding regulations and guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Abstracts pertinent information from patient records. Assigns ICD-9/10 CM or HCPCS codes, for billing (both hospital and clinics) as appropriate.
  • Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes.
  • Assist with bill problem resolution, researches and communicates guidelines for billable services.
  • Assist in the Riverview Health Charge master with applicable coding guidelines and Riverview policies and procedure.
  • Assist in working with clinical directors and helping to implement CDM changes.
  • Assist with hospital and clinic departmental charge masters.
  • Remains current with coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Brings identified concerns to Lead Coder or Director of HIM for resolution.
  • Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and American Medical Association and adheres to official coding guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ability to acquire any one of the certifications listed below within 1 year of employment:
    • RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator, or
    • RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician, or
    • CPC - Certified Professional Coder
    • CCA - Certified Coding Associate
    • CCS - Certified Coding Specialist
    • CCS-P - Certified Coding Specialist - Professional

Preferred(s):

  • Current certification in any of these areas: RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CCA, CCS, or CCS-P
  • 2+ years previous of coding experience i.e. hospital in/outpatient
  • 2+ years experience with coding, and knowledge of medical records
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Sciences, or related field
