Job Summary
The Port Mechanic oversees maintenance and repair operations of Bowhead Transport vessels and equipment, coordinating major shipyard projects, repairs, and maintenance with third-party contractors, vendors, and engineering teams. The role supports compliance with all regulatory and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with technicians to design, build, diagnose, repair, or perform maintenance on vessels, forklifts, vehicles, loaders, etc.
  • Manage and execute shipyard projects, ensuring efficiency, quality, and adherence to schedules and budgets.
  • Maintain records of all maintenance activities and coordinate reporting with management.
  • Coordinate with vessel and land-based crews for timely maintenance and repairs.
  • Communicate plans, schedules, and reports to management.
  • Ensure all work meets safety and legal standards (USCG, ABS, etc.).
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Assist in selecting shipyards, docks, and ports for repairs, and schedule activities accordingly.
  • Source parts, materials, and supplies, liaising with procurement teams.
  • Attend vessel or equipment surveys and advise on seaworthiness and market value.
  • Coordinate with insurance and regulatory authorities for documentation and incident reports.
  • Travel as needed for emergency repairs or salvage operations.

Qualifications

  • Proven marine engineering and heavy equipment repair experience.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and general PC operations.
  • At least 2 years of operating vessels 50+ feet.
  • Minimum 2 years in marine cargo operations.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
  • Familiarity with remote Alaskan locations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and solve technical problems.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Resident of Anchorage, Seward, or nearby area.

Physical & Environmental Demands
Work environments include shipyards, docks, ports, bays, waterways, offices, warehouses, and outdoor zones. Flexibility for extended hours, travel, and physical demands such as lifting up to 75 pounds are required.
