UMIAQ Environmental, a subsidiary of UIC, seeks a Site Safety and Health Coordinator to lead safety programs across environmental projects. This role promotes safety culture, ensures OSHA compliance, and protects personnel involved in site assessments, remediation, and monitoring activities. The ideal candidate has extensive spill response, hazardous materials management, and emergency planning experience, with strong analytical and collaborative skills.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain safety and health programs for environmental projects.
  • Conduct safety audits, risk assessments, and site inspections for regulatory compliance.
  • Handle hazardous materials and waste properly.
  • Train staff on safety procedures and emergency protocols.
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain safety records and documentation.
  • Act as primary safety contact on project sites, liaising with authorities.
  • Support development of site-specific Health and Safety Plans.
  • Lead safety meetings and training sessions.
  • Collaborate with project teams to foster safety culture.
  • Perform field visits, work in various weather conditions, and travel as needed (25-30%).
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or related field (preferred).
  • Over 3 years of safety experience in environmental, construction, or industrial settings.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and hazardous waste regulations.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Certifications such as OSHA 30, HAZWOPER 40, CHST, CSP preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred or required.
Preferred Experience
  • Waste characterization and hazardous waste management.
  • Oil spill response and Arctic logistics.
  • Wildlife protection and indigenous community engagement.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

The role involves outdoor work in extreme weather, use of PPE, operating vehicles, and working at heights or in confined spaces. Physical activity includes walking, standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and working irregular hours, including travel and overnight stays in remote sites.
