Job description

This is a seasonal, part-time position. Assignment at a City pool will end in September 2025. The incumbent(s) may work up to 960 hours per Fiscal year. Work hours and schedules vary according to program and participant needs.

This recruitment is open until further notice and can close at any time. Under general supervision, the Pool Manager will:

  • Provide leadership and support to the Aquatics admin team across various locations, ensuring smooth operations.
  • Oversee and manage pool activities, ensuring the safety of all patrons through vigilant surveillance and the enforcement of safety regulations.
  • Lead patrols of the pool and aquatics areas, proactively identifying and addressing hazards or unsafe behavior to maintain a secure environment.
  • Ensure full compliance with pool safety rules, holding both staff and guests accountable for maintaining a safe and orderly facility.
  • Respond decisively to emergencies, perform rescues, and administer first aid, CPR, or artificial respiration as required.
  • Stay alert and take swift action to mitigate risks and prevent accidents in and around the water.
  • Mentor and train junior lifeguards, ensuring they develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to respond to emergencies effectively.
  • Educate and guide pool patrons on water safety, reinforcing the importance of following facility rules for everyone’s wellbeing.
  • Lead or assist in conducting routine emergency drills, ensuring all lifeguard staff are prepared and capable in real-life situations.
  • Take an active role in organizing and overseeing aquatics events and programs, ensuring they run smoothly and safely.
  • Manage administrative tasks, including answering phones, running errands, and securing necessary supplies to support daily operations.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative environment by working closely with team members and assisting in other responsibilities as directed by the Aquatics Department.
  • Uphold the highest standards of safety and professionalism while performing lifeguard duties and ensuring the well-being of all facility users.
  • Contribute to staff scheduling, pool operations, and facility maintenance, providing valuable input to the Aquatics Section Administrative team.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, remaining calm under pressure and making informed decisions to prioritize safety and ensure effective crisis management.

Must be 18 years of age or have completed twelfth (12) grade; Five months of experience working with Santa Ana Aquatics or seven and a half months of experience working with an aquatics program, and a combination of training and experience which provides the desirable knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.

Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate, CPR certificate and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer certificate is REQUIRED. If you do not possess these certificates, the City may assist you in obtaining them at no cost to you by the completion of the hiring process.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledgeof: safety guidelines and preventative safety rules of pool environment and basic swim stroke techniques.

Abilityto: work with children and adults of all ages and backgrounds; understand and verbally communicate effectively in English to the public; answer questions about a wide range of aquatics subjects; handle a variety of emergency situations specific to aquatic facilities.

Special Requirement:Must be willing and able to work irregular hours, including weekends, holidays, days and evenings, on a regular basis as a condition of employment.

Bilingual fluency in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Sign Language is highly desirable.
