Job summary

St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO seeks a Polysomnographic Technologist for our Sleep Laboratory. This per diem (PD/PRN) role supports diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders in a hospital setting, with overnight shifts from 6:30pm to 7:00am.

You will attach sensors, monitor brain activity, heart rate, breathing, and muscle activity, score sleep stages, and liaise with sleep physicians. Required: HS diploma, Certification as a Polysomnographic Technologist or Respiratory Therapist,

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or equivalent required.
• Certified Polysomnographic Technologist or Respiratory Therapist required.
• Current BCLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintained.
• Graduate of an accredited polysomnography or respiratory therapy program preferred.
• Eligible for BRPT registry preferred.
• Minimum 1 year technical sleep lab experience preferred.
• Experience scoring sleep studies preferred.

Responsibilities

• Obtain patient medical history, focusing on sleep habits and medications.
• Perform overnight sleep studies with sensors monitoring EEG, EOG, ECG, EMG, breathing, SpO2, and movement.
• Explain procedures and prepare patients for sleep to reduce anxiety.
• Use equipment to collect data and identify sleep disruptions (e.g., apnea, PLMs).
• Score sleep stages (REM/NREM) using specialized software.
• Identify sleep disorders and refer for physician review as needed.
• Administer CPAP/BiPAP during study to assess therapy settings.

We are seeking a Polysomnographic Technologist, also referred to as a Sleep Technologist or Polysomnographer for our Sleep Laboratory in our hospital. A Sleep Technologist plays an important role in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders within our hospital. A Polysomnographic Tech’s primary responsibility is to perform polysomnography, a type of sleep study that monitors various physiological parameters to assess sleep patterns, identify abnormalities, and support the diagnosis of sleep-related issues. This position is on a per diem basis, meaning PD/PRN as needed.

Responsibilities

• Obtain the patient’s medical history, especially regarding sleep habits, disorders, and current medications that might influence sleep patterns
• Perform overnight sleep studies by attaching sensors to patients and monitoring various physiological indicators during sleep, you may track brain activity (EEG), eye movements (EOG), heart rate (ECG), muscle activity (EMG), breathing patterns, oxygen levels and body movements
• Prepare patients for sleep studies by explaining procedures, attaching sensors, and create a comfortable environment for sleep, ensure that patients understand the process, helping reduce anxiety and discomfort
• Use advanced equipment to collect data, which helps identify disruptions in sleep, such as apnea (breathing interruptions), periodic limb movements, or other abnormalities
• Use specialized software to "score" different stages of sleep, including REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-rapid eye movement), based on recorded data
• Identify irregularities, such as obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, or narcolepsy, which can then be reviewed by a sleep specialist for diagnosis
• May administer CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) or BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) during the study to determine effective pressure settings for patients who may need therapy

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent required
• Certified Polysomnographic Technologist or Respiratory Therapist required
• Current BCLS (AHA) Certificate upon hire and maintain current
• Graduate of an accredited polysomnography program or respiratory therapy program preferred
• Eligible for registry through the BRPT preferred
• Minimum of 1 year technical experience working in a sleep lab/center preferred
• Experience scoring sleep studies preferred
