Job summary

Riverview Regional Medical Center is looking for a Polysomnographic Technologist to join their Sleep Laboratory department in Gadsden, AL. In this role, you will conduct and analyze sleep studies to help diagnose various sleep disorders like sleep apnea and insomnia.

The position requires a high school diploma and completion of an accredited polysomnography program. Certification is needed within the first six months of employment. The role offers a full-time schedule with night shifts and a range of benefits including health insurance.

Qualifications

  • Completion of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine A-STEP program or equivalent.
  • Certification or registry must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • BLS certification required upon hire.

Overview

We are seeking a Polysomnographic Technologist, sometimes referred to as a Sleep Lab Tech, Sleep Technologist or Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) in our Sleep Laboratory department. The Polysomnographic Technologist is a specialized healthcare professional who conducts and analyzes sleep studies to diagnose and monitor patients with sleep disorders. Polysomnographic Techs identify conditions such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, periodic limb movement disorder, insomnia, and REM behavior disorder. This position is on a per diem basis, PD/PRN, meaning as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare the sleep lab or hospital room, review patient history and orders, and educate patients on the sleep study process.
  • Apply sensors to monitor brain, heart, muscle, eye, and respiratory activity while ensuring patient safety and data quality.
  • Observe and respond to sleep‑related events such as apneas, oxygen desaturations, or abnormal cardiac activity during the study.
  • Record and score sleep stages and respiratory events, using software tools to prepare data for physician interpretation.
  • Initiate and adjust CPAP, BiPAP, or ASV therapy as needed and troubleshoot equipment or patient concerns during the study.
  • Collaborate with the care team and educate patients on sleep disorders, home testing, and positive airway pressure therapy compliance.
Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • BLS (AHA) upon hire and maintain current.
  • Completion of American Academy of Sleep Medicine A-STEP program with eligibility to sit for board certification or registry; or graduate of an accredited polysomnography program, or enrolled in the last semester of an accredited polysomnography program to qualify as a student technician.
  • Recent graduate of an accredited polysomnography program must obtain certification or registry within 6 months of hire date; or for completion of the AASM A-STEP program must obtain certification or registry within 6 months of program completion.
  • For student polysomnography technicians, must obtain certification or registry within 6 months of graduation date from accredited program.

Preferred:

  • Eligible for registry through the BRPT.
  • Minimum of 1 year technical experience working in a sleep lab/center.
  • Experience scoring sleep studies.
