Job summary

IHA in Michigan is seeking a Sleep Technologist to perform comprehensive evaluations and polysomnography under the supervision of the Clinical Director. You will conduct testing, scoring, and patient education to support quality sleep care.

The role involves equipment preparation, data quality assurance, and patient safety, including PAP and oxygen therapy, with a 12-hour night shift and 72 hours per pay period, scheduled per the CBA.

Qualifications

  • BRPT credential required.
  • AMA graduate or equivalent training.
  • Experience in sleep lab setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Gathers and analyzes patient information and prepares documentation.
  • Prepares and calibrates equipment; applies sensors per published standards.
  • Performs polysomnographic data acquisition and monitors study quality.
  • Assists with interventions (CPAP, oxygen) and patient safety.
  • Documents observations and assists with scoring sleep/wake and events.
  • Ensures compliance with safety, BRPT standards, and lab protocols.

Description

Provides comprehensive evaluations and treatment of sleep disorders, under the general supervision of the Clinical Director (MD) or other designee, including polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. Can perform all duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician along with scoring of sleep studies and can assist with supervision of other staff.

72hrs per pp, 7p-7:30a, weekends and holidays to be scheduled in accordance with CBA.

Gathers and Analyzes Patient Information
  • Reviews history, physical information, medications, procedure request and study protocol.
  • Completes and verifies documentation. Ensures any medication that were taken prior to entering the Sleep Lab by patients are recording in the sleep lab software system for provider review.
  • Explains the procedure and orients the patient to the sleep center.
Testing Preparation Procedures
  • Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.
  • Cleans sleep equipment (masks, tubing, electrodes, etc.) according to manufacturers’ recommendations.
  • Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
  • Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments, if necessary.
  • Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
Polysomnographic Procedures
  • Follows procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data.
  • Follows “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.).
  • Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identifies and reports signal abnormalities.
  • Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Assists with appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
  • Follows “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.).
  • Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Polysomnographic Record Scoring

Assists with scoring sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.

Scores clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals etc.).

Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.

Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.

Complies with the BRPT standards of conduct.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Registered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.
