Job summary

Qualifications

  • Generate accurate reports and discuss results with lab physicians.
  • Provide quality assurance feedback and staff education as needed.

Job Summary

Position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Sleep Disorders Lab. The incumbent is responsible for scoring overnight polysomnograms and for performing MSLT and specialized sleep studies. Additionally responsible for serving as a resource to other department personnel and other ancillary medical personnel as needed. Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education: (None)

Licenses/Certifications: Registered by the Board of Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT - Registered Polysomnographic Technologist); Certification in Basic Life Support.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills

Three (3) years experience as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) performing and scoring sleep studies proficiently.

The position requires occasional or frequent lifting up to 75-100 pounds and carrying of up to 30 pounds.

Principal Accountabilities

Analyze recorded data according to the current AASM standard. Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines. Score clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals etc.) according to center specific protocols. Generate accurate reports by tabulating clinical event data and discussing results and treatment outcomes with lab physicians. Provide Quality Assurance feedback for every study and staff education for areas of concern when necessary. Must be able to successfully complete monthly Inter-scorer Reliability Exams according to the system standard.

Delivers appropriate care at a competent level and according to the age of the patient or patient population being served.

Assists and works closely with department managers, including but not limited to: all aspects of patient care including patient satisfaction, patient concerns and problem solving and service recovery. Provides in-service training, coordinates education and orientation to Sleep Lab personnel. Monitors polysomnogram during patient examination, scores polysomnogram and prepares detailed summary of clinical events. Ensures the safety and welfare of patients, including pediatric and psychiatric patients with special needs.

Performs complex procedures and special activities. Prepares for and conducts overnight testing procedures; reviews patient records, examines orders and protocols for study and recognizes chief sleep/wake complaints. Interviews patient to assess current medications, recent alcohol or caffeine ingestion, current sleep pattern and deed for treatment intervention during study.

Communicates with physician or manager to clarify unclear or inappropriate orders and to provide information regarding patient status.

Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
