Job Summary

Position responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Sleep Disorders Lab, scoring overnight polysomnograms, performing MSLT and specialized sleep studies, and serving as a resource to other department personnel and ancillary medical personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: None
• Licenses/Certifications: Registered by the Board of Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT); Basic Life Support certification
• Experience/Knowledge/Skills: Three (3) years of experience as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist performing and scoring sleep studies proficiently; ability to lift 75-100 pounds occasionally or frequently and carry up to 30 pounds

Responsibilities

• Analyze recorded data according to the current AASM standard and score sleep/wake stages using professionally accepted guidelines
• Score clinical events (respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) according to center‑specific protocols
• Generate accurate reports by tabulating clinical event data and discussing results and treatment outcomes with lab physicians
• Provide quality assurance feedback for every study and educate staff on areas of concern
• Successfully complete monthly Inter‑scorer Reliability Exams according to the system standard
• Deliver appropriate care at a competent level, considering the age of the patient or patient population served
• Assist and work closely with department managers in all aspects of patient care, including patient satisfaction, patient concerns, problem solving, and service recovery
• Provide in‑service training, coordinate education, and orient Sleep Lab personnel
• Monitor polysomnogram during patient examination, score the polysomnogram, and prepare detailed summary of clinical events
• Ensure the safety and welfare of patients, including pediatric and psychiatric patients with special needs
• Perform complex procedures and special activities as required
• Prepare for and conduct overnight testing procedures, review patient records, examine orders and protocols, and recognize chief sleep/wake complaints
• Interview patients to assess current medications, recent alcohol or caffeine ingestion, current sleep pattern, and diary for treatment intervention during study
• Communicate with physicians or managers to clarify unclear or inappropriate orders and to provide information regarding patient status
• Ensure safe care for patients, staff, and visitors; comply with all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity, and quality of service
• Promote individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency, supporting department‑based goals, and serving as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff
• Demonstrate commitment to caring for every member of the community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences, and model Memorial Hermann’s service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized, and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues
