Overview

Reporting to the Senior Materials Scientist, the Polymer Chemist will be responsible for supporting the development of silicone-based formulations for adjustable lens technology, as well as contributing to the advancement of silicone raw material characterization and the raw material selection process. Key responsibilities include formulation development and optimization, characterization, and the synthesis of new polymeric materials for the next generation of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)

Key responsibilities include formulation development and optimization, characterization, and the synthesis of new polymeric materials for the next generation of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Aid development of silicone-based formulations to yield materials with desired processing and performance profiles.
• Synthesize silicone-based and silicone-containing monomers and polymers utilizing various polymerization techniques, including ring-opening, cationic, anionic, and controlled radical polymerizations.
• Maintain R&D laboratory workspaces, equipment, and chemical and consumables inventories.
• Optimize the silicone material selection process to enhance the scale and quality of the LAL.
• Analyze silicone raw materials, intermediate formulation mixes, and final formulations using conventional soft materials characterization techniques, including GPC, rheology, tensiometry, and spectroscopy methods such as NMR, UV-Vis, and Raman, as well as thermal characterization techniques like DSC, DMA, and TGA.
• Assist in process development by coordinating with members of other departments in the transfer of materials under consideration.
  
  

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Strong laboratory skills and experience with synthetic organic chemistry and/or polymer synthesis is a must.
• Strong background in polymer chemistry/materials science (soft materials) is a must.
• Experience with formulation development and optimization.
• In depth knowledge of polymeric materials characterization techniques: GPC, NMR, optical and thermal analysis is required.
• Effective analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply creative solutions to challenges.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work cross-functionally in a collaborative manner
  
  

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, And TRAINING

• Master’s degree in Materials Science (soft materials), Polymer Chemistry or Polymer Engineering is preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with significant laboratory experience is also acceptable.
• 3-5 years of relevant work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong preference for a minimum of 2 years in medical devices industry where polymer chemistry is a critical element essential in the product
• Training to be completed per the training plan for this position as maintained in the document control system
• The training requirements on TRN-10007 Insider Trading Policy, TRN-10008 Global Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption Policy and TRN-10009 Code of Business Conducts and Ethics must be diligently completed within 30 days from the hiring date and on an annual basis
