Summary

The Unconventional (TU) is seeking a qualified Reviewer/Editor/Certifier to support the Department of Justice (DOJ) with Translation, Interpretation, Transcription, and other Linguistic Support Services (LSS). Activities include translating documents (written and electronic), video and audio media content (e.g., CDs, .wav files), and providing ancillary services such as court and deposition interpretation. Source materials involve legal, business, administrative, medical, scientific, financial, historical, geographical, and military terminology, including technology-related concepts in sciences (chemical, physical, cyber). The specialized terminology varies significantly from everyday language in both source and target languages.

The materials to be translated, transcribed, or interpreted are legal in nature. They may be provided in various formats, including electronic or hard copies of legal documents, reports, manuscripts, correspondence, multimedia presentations, spreadsheets, SMS/MMS messages, and audio/video files. Content ranges from highly technical and complex to informal and colloquial language. Examples include medical reports, chemical lab reports, financial statements, legal documents, treaties, court decisions, law enforcement communications, and sensitive information. All materials are considered sensitive, requiring strict confidentiality measures.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of five (5) years of recent experience in the required language with superior English and editing skills.
• Qualifying scores of ILR 4 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests.
• Resided in the U.S. for at least 3 of the last 5 years (not necessarily consecutive).
• At least 1 year of experience working with law enforcement or legal departments.
• U.S. citizenship.
• Proficiency in both English and the foreign language, including formal, legal, diplomatic, and casual contexts, with knowledge of slang and regionalisms.
• Knowledge of specialized vocabulary related to government roles and missions, with research and analytical skills for terminology judgments, using translation resources and reference materials.
• Fluent writing in their native language and professional command of the non-native language.
• Ability to translate accurately without omissions or additions, preserving tone and register.
• Adherence to professional linguist ethics.
• Proficiency in Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, especially SDL Trados Studio.

Clearance: Active Public Trust or higher security clearance.

Location: Remote / National Capitol Region / Various CONUS Locations.

Travel: Some travel may be required.
