Job summary

Progress Residential seeks a Director of Government Relations to advocate before state and local officials on policies impacting the SFR industry. Reporting to the VP, the role will execute strategies, build durable relationships, and communicateProgress’ positions with limited federal engagement as needed.

The role requires an operator who can manage issues independently while aligning with the VP of Government Affairs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred in related fields.
• 7–10 years in government relations, public policy, or similar roles.
• Capitol Hill or state legislative experience required.
• Working knowledge of housing policy or regulated real estate.
• Strong understanding of legislative processes and political dynamics.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Proven ability to build and sustain relationships with policymakers.
• High ethical standards with compliance in lobbying laws.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and analyze state and local legislative and regulatory proposals affecting Progress and the SFR industry.
• Assess policy impact and elevate risks early.
• Develop and implement advocacy strategies with the VP of Government Affairs.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external consultants for effective advocacy.
• Establish and maintain relationships with legislators, regulators, and government staff.
• Educate decision-makers on the SFR industry’s role, concerns, and contributions.
• Support development and implementation of laws and regulations affecting Progress.
• Advocate for policies that promote fair competition and economic growth.
• Cultivate relationships with industry leaders and advocacy organizations.
• Coordinate with other lobbyists to form alliances in support of objectives.
• Represent Progress at industry meetings, conferences, and public forums.
• Prepare senior leadership for meetings with government officials and agencies.
• Serve as surrogate for the VP of Government Affairs when appropriate.
