Job summary

Public Counsel, a nonprofit public interest law firm in Los Angeles, seeks a Director of Policy & Coalition Building to lead policy advocacy and coalition efforts. You will identify policy priorities, coordinate across legal, communications, and development teams, and foster relationships with community organizations and policymakers.

The ideal candidate brings strong policy expertise, relationship-building skills, and a commitment to client- and community-centered advocacy.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field required
• 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in policy advocacy, legislative affairs, government relations, coalition building, or related field
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to translate complex policy issues
• Experience leading cross-team policy initiatives and coordinating with legal and development teams
• Spanish language skills a plus

Responsibilities

• Develop and advance a coordinated organizational approach to policy advocacy across Public Counsel
• Assess current policy work and establish systems for tracking activity and outcomes
• Identify policy priorities and develop strategies leveraging organizational expertise
• Create internal guidelines and tools for policy advocacy and compliance
• Convene cross‑team policy working groups to promote collaboration and advocacy
• Advise leadership on policy strategy and how it complements direct services and litigation
• Build and maintain relationships with grassroots organizations, coalitions, policymakers, and partners
• Represent Public Counsel’s policy priorities with external audiences and funders
