Job summary

Public Counsel is a nonprofit public interest law firm in Los Angeles seeking a Paralegal to support its Opportunity Under Law team. You will assist with complex federal and state cases, manage deadlines, and coordinate with staff, volunteers, and clients to advance civil rights and economic justice.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree or paralegal certification and 5–7 years of litigation support experience, with Spanish fluency and strong organizational and research skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or paralegal certification/degree is required.
• 5–7 years of litigation support/paralegal experience is expected.
• Experience with trial and discovery support is preferred.
• Ability to support large teams or multiple attorneys and manage several caseloads.
• Excellent written and oral communication and proofreading skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Proficiency with legal research and citations (Bluebook)
• Fluency in Spanish; ability to travel locally and nationally.

Responsibilities

• Conduct trauma-informed interviews and draft declarations and legal documents.
• Foster relationships with community organizations and clients.
• Prepare and format legal documents, cite-check, and create tables of contents/ authorities.
• File documents in state and federal courts; learn court rules.
• Assist with discovery, document review, and production.
• Assist with trial prep, including binders and exhibits, timelines.
• Attend litigation team meetings and coordinate with volunteers.
• Support internal project management and time records for fee requests.
• Provide administrative support and maintain calendars and file management.
