About The Office

About The Role
MOCJ seeks a highly motivated, detail-oriented Policy Analyst with excellent communication and analytical skills for its Policy & Research units. Under the supervision of the Policy Director and Deputy Executive Director for Research, the Policy Analyst performs a wide range of programmatic, research, and administrative duties, and provides support to the staff on the team on special projects that include a variety of stakeholders. This is an exciting entry-level opportunity for someone who is interested in learning the mechanics of City government, the City’s Criminal Justice System, Reentry, and policymaking at the municipal level.
The Policy Analyst will assist and support the Policy & Research units in the implementation of a range of public safety and reform initiatives. The policy analyst will also aid in developing strategies aimed at increasing fairness and trust in the Criminal Justice System as well as reducing crime through smart public safety measures and community engagement.
The Policy Analyst’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Day-to-day administrative and programmatic support to the team’s staff, including scheduling and coordinating external and internal meetings;
- Preparing briefing documents and memos, tracking priorities, and conducting follow-ups both internally and externally;
- Communicating with senior staff, organizing meeting agendas, and preparing meeting minutes for dissemination;
- Doing “deep dives” into specific research questions and creating presentations to convey data trends and policy recommendations;
- Maintaining and updating spreadsheets, management reports, contract reports, workplans, and developing time and politically sensitive issues;
- Liaising with other agencies, including City Hall, as needed;
- Cultivating and maintaining excellent relationships and stakeholder groups including the Criminal Courts, District Attorneys’ Offices, Indigent Defense Providers, Advocacy Groups, law enforcement, and other City agencies such as the Department of Correction.
- Supporting the Research team on tasks related to:
- Designing and implementing evaluations of criminal justice-related programs;
- Organizing and/or cleaning administrative and programmatic data;
- Compiling data used for regular reporting and contributing to reporting deliverables;
- Conducting data analysis using statistical or general programming (e.g. R, SQL, Python, Tableau, Excel, or similar) and producing digestible visualizations;
- Translating and communicating insights from data and research in materials produced for both internal and external audiences; and
- Other general project management duties and research support as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
- High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Residency Requirement
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
