Job summary

The New York City Police Department seeks a Police Surgeon to assess fitness for duty for uniformed members and to oversee medical services within the Medical Division. The role includes authorizing line-of-duty medical care and responding to injured personnel.

Residency within NYC is generally required within 90 days; preference for those willing to reside in surrounding counties. The department supports research, testimony, and disaster drill participation.

Qualifications

• Must hold a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York.
• Must have Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board.
• Preference for Board Certifications in Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, or Pulmonary Specialty.

Responsibilities

Job description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The New York City Police Department strives to foster a safe and fair city through the strategic deployment of resources, focusing on both crime prevention and addressing quality-of-life concerns while building lasting community relationships.

The Medical Division overseas the health and well-being of all members of the service. The Division provides general medical services and assessments for uniformed members of the service. All medical, psychological, drug screening, counselling and professional services, medical records, medical bills, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), line of duty prescriptions, and disability applications are processed through the Medical Division. The Medical Division also conducts internal investigations to preserve and protect the integrity of the Department's sick leave protocols and the disability retirement system. In addition, the medical Division's Occupational Health Assessment and Wellness Unit provides medical, educational., and nutritional counselling to members of the service and deploys a Mobile Health Vehicle that visits commands throughout the five boroughs.

The Police Surgeon will primarily determine the fitness for duty of uniformed members of service. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

• Follow members' course of treatment and authorize medical services for line of duty injuries;
• Required to respond to hospitalized members of the service who are injured in the line of duty or seriously ill;
• Participate in Department health fairs and other medical initiatives;
• Provide consults in his/her area of medical expertise;
• Engage in Department research activities;
• Provide expert testimony as needed;
• Participate in all cause disaster drills.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York plus valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the Department.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
