Qualifications

The New York City Police Department is seeking an outstanding Psychologist to join its team as Deputy Director of the Behavioral Care and Support Section (BCSS). The primary responsibilities are to provide management, administration and coordination of fitness for duty evaluations for police officers and civilians of the New York City Police Department.


The preferred candidate will have demonstrated leadership and strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams.


The responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:



  • Management, administration and coordination of the fitness for duty evaluations of police officers of the NYPD

  • Management, administration and coordination of the psychiatric/psychological evaluations for civilian and uniformed members of the NYPD

  • Supervision and oversight of the work activities of uniformed and civilian personnel including psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, and externs

  • Provide training and supervision to psychologists for fitness for duty evaluations, mental health assessment, psychological testing and evaluation

  • Conduct candidate evaluation, assessment and testing, engage in research projects and attend division conferences

  • Provide clinical supervision to the Counseling Services Unit

  • Provide support to the Legal Bureau on Civil Service Commission appeal cases, and expert testimony

  • Reports to the Executive Director of BCSS, Deputy Chief Surgeon Psychiatry, Supervising Chief Surgeon and Commanding Officer of Medical Division

  • LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED: New York State license in Psychology

  • Must reside within the NYPS required New York State Counties

ADMINISTRATIVE PSYCHOLOGIST - 82980

Minimum Qualifications

Qualification Requirements:



  • (a) A doctorate degree in psychology from an accredited college and five years of full-time, satisfactory professional psychological experience in a recognized hospital, law enforcement agency, clinic, social agency, school, or other approved organization, of which at least eighteen months must have been in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or in supervision of professional psychologists performing duties in any of the settings described immediately above; and

  • (b) A valid license as Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education; or

  • A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and possession of a valid Board Certification issued by the American Specialty Board in the area of Psychiatry, and two years of full-time, satisfactory, professional psychological or psychiatric experience in a recognized hospital, clinic, law enforcement agency, social agency, school or other approved organization, of which at least eighteen months must have been in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or in supervision of professional psychologists and/or psychiatrists performing duties in any of the settings immediately described above; or

  • Education and/or experience equivalent to \"1\" or \"2\" above. However, all candidates must have either the doctorate degree in psychology and the license as Psychologist described in \"1\" above, or the license to practice medicine and the Board Certification in Psychiatry as described in \"2\" above. In addition, all candidates must have the eighteen months of experience in an administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory capacity described in \"1\" and \"2\" above.


Preferred Skills

Minimum 5 years of experience and competence in fitness for duty evaluation, psychological evaluation, pre-employment mental health assessment and psychological testing. Supervisory experience is a must.


Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
