Job summary

Qualifications

• Requires an Associate degree or equivalent work experience.
• Minimum of three years related experience.
• Valid Arizona Class D Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of Property & Evidence personnel with training and accountability.
• Ensure property and evidence are received, documented, stored, tracked, and disposed with chain of custody.
• Maintain compliance with laws, accreditation standards, and retention requirements.
• Coordinate inventories, audits, inspections, and quality-control reviews (firearms, narcotics, currency, biological evidence).
• Oversee lawful return, transfer, destruction, or disposition of property and improve storage capacity.
• Evaluate and improve evidence-management systems and workflows to increase accuracy and efficiency.

This critical supervisory position is responsible for maintaining the integrity, security, accountability, and efficient operation of the Department’s property and evidence program.The successful candidate will lead employees, maintain strict chain-of-custody standards, oversee inventories and audits, ensure compliance with applicable laws and accreditation standards, improve operational processes, and help guide the future direction of the Property & Evidence Unit.Position Dynamics & ScheduleThe Property & Evidence Supervisor is a full-time civilian supervisory position working closely with Police Department leadership, sworn personnel, investigators, prosecutors, courts, outside agencies, City departments, vendors, and members of the public. The schedule is a compressed workweek consisting of four ten-hour shifts, with flexibility required to address operational needs, audits, inventories, accreditation activities, projects, and other time-sensitive matters. This individual should be prepared to lead the Unit through continued modernization, accreditation, technology improvements, operational changes, and the planning and transition to a future Property & Evidence facility.Key Responsibilities:Leadership & Supervision: Plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of Property & Evidence personnel while providing training, coaching, accountability, and professional development.Evidence Integrity: Ensure property and evidence are properly received, documented, packaged, stored, tracked, transferred, released, and disposed of while maintaining a defensible chain of custody.Compliance & Accreditation: Maintain compliance with applicable laws, court requirements, Department policies, retention requirements, professional standards, and Arizona Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ALEAP) requirements.Audits & Quality Assurance: Coordinate inventories, audits, inspections, and quality-control reviews, including enhanced oversight of firearms, narcotics, currency, biological evidence, and other high-risk property.Disposition & Storage Management: Oversee the lawful return, transfer, destruction, auction, and disposition of property while developing processes that reduce unnecessary inventory and improve storage capacity.Facility Security: Maintain appropriate access controls, security procedures, alarms, video surveillance, and safeguards for Property & Evidence facilities and storage areas.Technology & Process Improvement: Evaluate and improve evidence-management systems, barcode technology, databases, workflows, and automation opportunities that increase accuracy, efficiency, accountability, and customer service.Facility & Project Planning: Participate in planning for future Property & Evidence facilities, including storage capacity, security, workflow, specialized storage, and the eventual secure relocation of evidence.Training & Safety: Ensure employees receive appropriate training in evidence handling, chain of custody, hazardous materials, firearms, narcotics, biohazards, safety, technology, and Department policies.Operational Excellence: Use data, performance measures, audits, and industry best practices to identify risk, improve operations, and provide recommendations to Police Department leadership.To view the full job description, work environment and physical demands, click here.Why Peoria?Recently voted the #1 place, to live, work and play, Peoria is a community you can be proud to work for.
