Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned by police command staff.

Job description

The general function of the Police Sergeant is to work under the supervision of the senior law enforcement officer of the location (typically the campus chief) while functioning as the shift level supervisor over law enforcement, security and other public safety personnel assigned to them and/or as a Sergeant involved in a specialized, technical or administrative area (i.e. training, investigations, SRT). Regular duties and responsibilities are to maintain order on the campus, enforce rules and regulations of the College, to be responsible for the security of buildings and people, motor vehicle regulations enforcement, and enforcement of the general laws of the state of Mississippi.

Evening Shift = Monday - Thursday (12:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.)
  1. Supervises an assigned group (i.e. a patrol shift, a training group) of law enforcement officers, campus security officers, or other public safety personnel under the direction of the Command Level officer for the campus or location.
  2. Maintain order on the campus, enforce rules and regulations of the College, to be responsible for the security of buildings and people, motor vehicle regulations enforcement, and enforcement of the general laws of the state of Mississippi.
  3. Keeps subordinates aware of changes to policy or statue issues relevant to campus law enforcement as provided by Police Command Staff.
  4. Write reports, analyze workloads and assist in schedule planning
  5. Performs office tasks within the scope of shift supervision.
  6. Performs other such relevant duties as assigned by police command staff.
  7. Responds to emergencies within jurisdiction to provide aid or enforcement while supervising shift personnel.
  8. Provides, if appropriate, experience in an area of need for the department such as firearms or other essential training items.

  • Minimum of five (5) years prior experience in law enforcement required.
  • Must possess the maturity and personality to enforce laws, rules and regulations in a fair and professional manner in a college environment.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule with overtime and extra duty necessary at times to meet the law enforcement needs of the College and its jurisdiction.
  • Excellent references from previous employers (external candidates.)
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Knowledge of operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of student support programs and services.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of applicable standards, policies and procedures within specialty area.
